On December 4, 1995, thanks to the hard work of several groups and months of effort, the Mill Valley
City Council approved the designation of the southernmost portion of Bay Front Park as an off-lease, dog use area.
While
many people had been using Bay Front Park as a dog park for many years before then, the area was unimproved and covered with
wild squash, scotch broom and heavy weeds. Because the park had once been a city dump, only loosely- covered with
topsoil, decades old broken china, cans and other material would often rise to the surface during rainy periods.
That
all began to change in 1996. The area was covered with new soil, trees were planted and the current grass grown from
seed.
Most agree that the Mill Valley Dog Park is among the best in the Bay Area and perhaps in the state
and has been for FIFTEEN YEARS. Yes, FIFTEEN great
years of canine joy. Our Park has become a permanent and well-used part of
Mill Valley and is a genuine part of the town's history. ♥
Well, the weather barely permitted, on Saturday, December 4, 2010, a determined
group of dogs & people braved the rain and clouds to commenorate the occaision. While it didn't rival some
of our memorable Friday Night affairs, there was a feeling of accomplishment. Avery
captured the happy crowd ~
